Everything you need to Know

Here are some things to know about dreadlocks:

  • Maturing process

New installations can take a long time in the chair. Dreadlocks will look flawless right away, but they will be a little stiff and sections tight in the beginning.

  • Washing

Most people with starter locs wash their dreadlocks every four weeks to prevent locs from unraveling too soon. You should wash your starter dreadlocks on a schedule that you feel comfortable with, but don't wash your hair by scratching and rubbing locs together.

  • Stages

The entire stages of locs can take 18-24 months upwards and have five stages: starter, budding, teen, maturity, and rooted.

  • Maintenance

Dreadlocks require regular maintenance and upkeep to keep them looking their best, which can require a significant time commitment and ongoing effort. Improper maintenance or installation of dreadlocks can lead to damage to the hair, such as breakage, thinning, or hair loss.

  • Starting with two strand twists

This method is probably one of the most popular and recommended ways to start your loc journey. You can change your mind, like the parting, sizing, or decide you don't want locs and simply take out the twists.

  • Things to avoid

Avoid build up, don't use wax on your dreadlocks, never retwist dry locs, over maintenance is damaging, and avoid tight styling.
